PEOPLE - The Candid Portrait by Richard Avedon

Similarly, we see the work of Richard Avedon, as below; Wallis, Duchess of Windsor; Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (King Edward VIII), by Richard Avedon, Bromide print, 1957.
Avedon, like Lipper has used the semi-candid approach to his subjects, yet in contrast to Lipper, Avedon chooses a blank background, devoid of any interruption. The look on his subjects faces are left alone to tell the story by themselves. Further images from Avedon and Lipper can be found by following the link to the National Portrait Gallery. http://www.npg.org.uk/collections

by Susan Lipper, Bromide Print 1982.

Taking a look through the past and present masters of photography, one is drawn instantly by the depth of difference in approach to the subject of people photography. For example, in this photograph by Susan Lipper we see two people, of who's relationship we do not know. They are placed in such a manner that there are various symbols and clues within the room, such as the painting behind them, and the photograph on the table. The arrangement suggests some sort of closeness, and they have been photographed in quite a candid manner.
